WHAT TURNS A POSTCARD INTO A COLLECTIVE MEMORY?

Happy designkrefeld!

In 2024, the Design Department at HSNR celebrated its 120th anniversary with a Mail Art exhibition. Together with Dean Erik Schmid, I worked on the project as a student assistant: we sent 500 postcards to designkrefeld alumni, friends, artists and designers, inviting them to congratulate the department on its anniversary. The returned designs were presented digitally and physically at the public anniversary exhibition in summer 2024.

Mail Art, also known as Correspondence Art, is an artistic practice in which works are created and exchanged by post. Originating in the 1960s with artist Ray Johnson, it invites recipients to transform postcards through drawing, collage, writing, printing or even destruction.

For this project, each blank postcard included a letter and a pre-printed return address set in lead type. The returned works were exhibited in the foyer of the Design Department at Hochschule Niederrhein. (photos: Pauline Vor)
